Looking for a rental property in Perth to accommodate you and your furry friend can be challenging.
The good news is that it’s becoming increasingly common for owners to allow pets, and more often than not property managers are advising owners to keep an open mind about pets..
Honesty is important
When applying, be upfront and honest with the Property Manager and the owner, there is no point hiding the fact you have a pet. If discovered, you could be forced to leave your home or give up the pet in order to stay.
If you have rented with your pet in the past, obtain references from the previous property owner or manager, these references when added to your application can help considerable with your application and subsequent approval.
Keep your property manager informed of changes
To maintain a good rental record, speak to your property manager as your circumstances change. Remember the approval for a pet is in most cases, just for the pet described, if your situation changes let your property manager know.
Be aware of strata titles
You should also be aware that many strata titled properties do not allow pets at all so even if the property owner is happy for you to keep one, the Strata Company has the authority to have the pet removed.
Consider the needs of your pet
Be realistic about your pet’s needs. This includes the appropriate size of the yard, suitable fencing, and an undercover area. If your pet is comfortable in their surroundings there is a less occurrence of barking, running away, or damage to the property.
Of course, if you are already in a rental agreement and want a pet, it is important you discuss your options with the Property Manager before taking on any commitments.
